The Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has the authority to grant driver’s licenses to residents of the state, and it likewise has the authority to revoke driver’s licenses in certain instances. If your driver’s license is revoked, you may or may not be eligible for a limited driving permit. In Georgia, limited driving permits are only granted in certain, specific instances where extreme hardship is shown by the applicant. In other words, driving in Georgia is a privilege that should not be taken for granted.
Under what circumstances can my driver’s license be revoked in Georgia?
There are a number of situations that can lead to the revocation of your driver’s license in Georgia. Many people do not realize that even their conduct in another state can result in the revocation of their Georgia driver’s license. You don’t necessarily have to be arrested or convicted within the boundaries of this state to lose your driver’s license. Typically, people have their driver’s licenses revoked following a DUI conviction. Additionally, people have their driver’s licenses revoked as punishment for drug-related crimes. In Georgia, you can also have your driver’s license revoked for failure to pay court-ordered child support. Finally, if you accumulate too many points on your driving record due to traffic citations, you can have your driver’s license revoked.
How do I qualify for a limited driving permit?
Under certain circumstances, you may qualify for a limited driving permit if your driver’s license has been revoked. As its name suggests, limited driving permits are limited. They are offered in limited circumstances and for limited purposes. In order to qualify for a limited driving permit, you must be able to show that you will suffer an “extreme hardship” if you are completely unable to drive. Under Georgia law, extreme hardship includes not being able to go to work or school, seek medical care, attend addiction counseling such as drug and/or alcohol treatment, attend court or provide transportation for an immediate family member.
